ABSTRACT

This study presents a comprehensive statistical analysis of the ground motion dataset collected from various seismic events in Europe. The availability of high-quality seismic data is crucial for earthquake hazard assessment, engineering design, and disaster preparedness. However, there are often gaps and limitations in existing datasets that hinder their utility for these purposes. This study aims to shed light on the statistical properties of the European ground motion dataset and proposes recommendations to address these data gaps. Our analysis begins with a thorough examination of the existing ground motion records in Europe. We investigate the distribution of ground motion parameters, such as peak ground acceleration (PGA) peak ground velocity (PGV), and spectral acceleration at 0.2s (SA) across different geographical regions. Furthermore, this paper highlights the challenges and shortcomings of the current European ground motion dataset. Common issues such as data sparsity, inconsistent recording practices, and limited spatial coverage are discussed in detail. One proposed solution to alleviate the gaps in the seismic dataset involves the utilization of synthetic ground motions corresponding to recorded earthquake events.
